Leonora Carrington and Max Ernst at Saint Martin d’Ardèche, 1939.

Carrington was Max Ernst’s second wife, he called her his Bride of the Wind. They met in 1937 and remained together until 1940, when he was arrested by the Gestapo in Nazi occupied France. After his arrest, Carrington was only allowed to see him once at the concentration camp he was held in. Carrington herself managed to escape to Spain, where she suffered a major mental breakdown caused why the stress of the invasion, growing delusions and being unable to help her husband. She was later able to travel to Lisbon, and from there to Mexico. Ernst managed to escape from the Gestapo with the help of Peggy Guggenheim in 1941, and moved to the United States.
